The Medical Oncology Unit of Fermo Murri Hospital was established in 1987. It is located in central Italy and consists of a 15-bed day-hospital and an outpatient clinic in a 280-bed general hospital. The Medical Oncology Unit staff is composed of seven medical oncologists, one nurse coordinator, nine nurses, one psychologist, one healthcare worker, one health attendant and two volunteers. The Medical Oncology Unit is involved in clinical research of the main tumours (breast, GI, lung) and in palliative care integration.

Hospice Bellaria is an accredited private facility, managed with a public-private partnership by the Hospice Foundation and the AUSL of Bologna. The care services available at Hospice Bellaria are both residential, with the possibility of hospitalization in the facility, and outpatient for Day Care interventions. A pediatric outpatient service is active within the Hospice.
Hospice Bellaria has 13 beds organized in 9 single rooms and 2 double rooms.

A 10-bed hospice opened in July 2009 in a facility 22 km from the hospital. It is managed by the Medical Oncology Unit of Fermo Murri Hospital. The hospice's multidisciplinary team is composed of seven nurses, one nurse coordinator, six healthcare workers, one social worker, three physical therapists, 15 volunteers, a psychologist and a catholic priest. In order to guarantee continuity of care, medical assistance is provided on rotation by five medical oncologists (with training in palliative care) from the Oncology Unit.

The Italian Society of Palliative Care, founded in Milan in 1986, is the only scientific society specifically established for the diffusion of the principles of palliative care (CP) in Italy. The SICP: promotes a clinical approach and global care aimed at protecting the dignity of people in the advanced and terminal phase of their illness and their life while protecting and simultaneously supporting the family members of the patient; promotes the humanization in medicine and the development of relationships with the patient and with his entire family pursuing professional goals and using "transversal" skills such as relationship, listening, empathy, collaboration, critical capacity and responsibility ; promotes the knowledge of palliative care in the population and works to produce correct information regarding the places where they are practiced; promotes the elaboration and application of regional and national laws and regulations that guarantee, within the health and social system, the right of access to the best possible palliative care for all patients and families in need; promoting, by participating as a member of the Members and in the interests of the sick and the families, the work of national regional, local institutional bodies and the development of a national network of accredited clinical centers for palliative care; promotes the application of knowledge in the field of palliative care, the research and study of the same and promotes the training at recognized universities and schools of all those who work in the care of the sick and their families; promotes the integration of health sectors and associations and voluntary sectors and implements or promotes information campaigns for the population; establishes scientific relations with national and international companies and bodies, having an affinity for goals and programs.

The centre is located in the university hospital of Terni, part of the Italian National Health System. At present, the division consists of a ward for inpatients and a day hospital for outpatients; the division is in the same department as the radiotherapy unit and also collaborates closely with the home-care service and the city hospice. The centre is a medical oncology department, with experience in the treatment of solid tumours, including rare cancers. The entire staff is interested in the global care of the patient and two physicians, a palliativist and a nurse are especially involved in supportive and palliative care and in-the-home care – thus creating a connection between the hospital and the patient’s home.

Oncology-Supportive Care in Cancer Unit Fondazione IRCCS, Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori, Milano
Description: Dedicated Oncology-SCCU (O-SCCU) born in June 2009 with the project of C. Ripamonti, as a clinical practice, teaching and research center, aimed in prevention, detection, treatment and study of anti-cancer treatment related toxicity and of physical, emotional, social and spiritual, financial needs the multicultural aspects of patients starting from the cancer diagnosis and during the trajectory of anticancer therapies. The O-SCCU is part of the Medical Oncologic & Hematology Department, is an outpatient clinic with 14 armchairs and two beds for Day Care. 5 physicians, 4 RNs and 10 volunteers of LILT are part the the Unit. The patients with severe toxicity who need to be hospitalized are admitted to the wards of Oncologic Units referring for primary cancer or Radiotherapy ward and cared by Oncologists/Radiotherapists of respective ward. Assess all patients’ needs (information, communication, emotional, social, spiritual, existential, financial ) , through Italian validated version of assessment tools (ESAS; HOPE; DIGNITY……..), in order to ensure early care of the patient in a holistic approach, support family members, survivors and healthcare professionals, promote research (pharmacological and non pharmacological) and educational programs.
- Regional Reference Center for Pediatric Palliative Care and Pain Therapy Italy, Padova
Based on the experience gained in many years of activity at the Department of Pediatrics of Padua by the medical and nursing team directed by Dr. Franca Benini, the Veneto Region with DGRV n.4029 December 2003, has established the reference center for the whole region in the field of palliative care and child pain therapy The first Center in Italy assists, supervises and supports the network of local services (Pediatrician of free choice, District, area hospital ...), in taking care of the child with incurable disease and his family. The multi-professional team of the Center evaluates and assists the physical symptoms, psychological and social needs of the child at home, in hospice and in hospital settings in all phases of the disease. The Center also guarantees consultancy activities for the management of chronic pain, pain and stress during diagnostic-therapeutic procedures, through pharmacological, non-pharmacological methods and physical treatments.
