A year ago, IAHPC announced the 2018 winner of the Institutional Award: Assisi Palliative Care Berhad, in Malaysia. The organization used its prize, a USD$2,000 Traveling Scholarship, to send Satwin Kaur to the 6th World Congress on Hospice and Palliative Care in Singapore, which took place in May. This is her report.
‘What I have learned during the conference is that new techniques or drugs or certain procedures are used to free the patient from cancer if diagnosed in an early stages... In my country, palliative care is well established but perhaps we need more education on palliative care within the hospital as well as palliative care awareness with the public. Certain states in Malaysia still have no palliative care services, or sometimes the patient or family is unaware of such services.
‘I would like to educate each and every one regarding palliative care services, and have people who need the services understand how to get themselves or any family member registered with us. Also, continuous education on palliative care [for health care professionals] is very important to prevent unnecessary suffering.’
Satwin took the opportunity, while in Singapore, to spend three days at HCA Hospice Care. While there, ‘I got to learn about the care provided for their patients. It was a great experience overall, as certain medications — like the fentanyl by injection — are not used in our home care setting, but is widely used there as a replacement for morphine by injection.’
