Message from the Chair and Executive Director

Dear readers,

For the first days of this month several of the IAHPC directors as well as staff members are in Copenhagen participating in the 14th World Congress of the European Association for Palliative Care. We had a board meeting before the start of the congress and discussed how we can improve our projects and better serve the global palliative care community.

We have an IAHPC booth in the exhibit area – those who join or renew their membership during the congress not only will have a discount, but their names will be entered in a raffle to win an iPad! So if you have not done so, remember to stop by our booth, meet our staff members and directors and have some fun!

During the past month, Liliana attended the Annual Meeting in Orlando of the Health Care Chaplaincy Network (HCCN) and gave a plenary presentation about the global status of palliative care. It was a great conference, attended by chaplains working in hospitals and clinics from around the USA as well as from other countries. Many thanks to the Rev. George Handzo for the invitation! Spiritual care is a component of palliative care included in the World Health Assembly Palliative Care Resolution. HCCN is providing the evidence and credibility needed to make this happen.

After Orlando, Liliana also attended the Caribbean palliative care conference, hosted by the Palliative Care Association of Jamaica, under the leadership of Dr. Dingle Spence. The theme of the conference was ‘Raising Awareness through Collaboration, Education and Practice’ and the conference certainly did it! Participants came from Barbados, the Cayman Islands, Grenada, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago. There were discussions about forming a Caribbean association of English-speaking countries, which we strongly encourage as a way to bring unity, strength and promote collaboration among countries in the region. We look forward to continuing out cooperation and working with the exceptional individuals who are leading the palliative care movement in the Caribbean. Well done!

Until next month,

Lukas Radbruch, MD
Chair, Board of Directors

Liliana De Lima, MHA
Executive Director
