Message from the Chair and Executive Director

Dear readers:

World Day: This past month, the Worldwide Palliative Care Alliance coordinated the celebration of the World Hospice and Palliative Care Day around the globe. Many countries hosted celebrations, meetings, seminars and advocacy activities to bring attention to the hospice/palliative care needs of patients and their families. Read the reports and share your stories in the WPCA website at http://www.worldday.org/

Call for nominations to the IAHPC Board: We recently announced a public call for nominations to 7 seats in the IAHPC Board of Directors. IAHPC members (formally termed members) are invited to nominate health professionals actively working in hospice and palliative care with a demonstrated interest in the development of international palliative care initiatives and issues. The criteria for nominations and instructions to participate in this process are included in this edition. Deadline for nominations is November 30, 2012. We look forward to your submissions.

Members' Recognition Month: As many of you know, October was Members' Recognition Month designed to build awareness and understanding of the vital function that our members play in the advancement of our mission and importantly to recognize them for their support. As part of this recognition, we offered two iPads as prizes in the following categories:

  1. Recognizing Loyalty: to maintain the loyalty of members by giving a prize to an individual or institution that keeps active. The winner of this category was Dr. Bishnu Paudel from Nepal. His name was randomly selected from members.
  2. Increasing Members: to increase the number of members by giving a prize to an individual or institution that bring the highest number of new or renewed members. The Leadership Development Initiative (LDI) in San Diego, USA, won this prize for supporting the affiliation or renewal of 45 new individuals!

Congratulations to the winners of these prizes. Dr. Paudel's bio and a description of the LDI program are included in this Newsletter.

Please take note that we recently changed the name of our membership program to membership program. We now call members those who we used to call members. This change is only in name – the structure of the program, the benefits offered to our members remain the same.

Special edition – Palliative Care in Developing Countries: The journal Progress in Palliative Care has published a special edition on Palliative Care in Developing Countries and invited IAHPC to help in this project. The special edition was prepared by invitation of the Editor-in-chief, Professor Mellar Davis, and with the effort of the authors who contributed by sharing their experiences in their countries. This edition of the NL includes a description of the special edition, the names of the contributors and a link to the journal. Many thanks to Professor Davis and the team at Maney Publishing for their interest in bringing attention to issues related to developing countries.

International Congress, Montreal: Last month IAHPC participated in the 19th International Congress on Palliative Care presented by McGill University in Montreal, Canada. As in previous years, we had a booth in the exhibit space. Our booth was visited by many people interested in learning more about our work and how we support palliative care globally. The grantees who benefited from an IAHPC Scholarship to attend this conference were also present. Lina Rozo, Ana Restrepo, Tania Pastrana and Liliana were there to greet everybody and give information to the visitors.

The grantees who received IAHPC Scholarships to support their travel were:

Emilce Vargas Ramírez, RN from Colombia
Laura Tupper, MD from Chile
