IAHPC’s annual fundraising campaign is on throughout December, so you get to “enjoy” the website’s popup for a few more weeks. We are nearly halfway to our goal of $150,000, and truly there is no donation too small. Your donation doesn’t just fund palliative care research, public awareness, global action, and practical webinars and courses for frontline workers and advocates. Those who choose to donate are proof that all of these—all our efforts to relieve health-related suffering—are both necessary and valuable.
Reminders
The deadline for individual nominations and institutional applications for IAHPC’s Recognition Awards is December 31, 2023. Six recipients—one person and one institution in each of three categories: low-, middle-, and high-income countries—will be awarded US $1,000, a certificate, and a one-year IAHPC membership. IAHPC members from all disciplines, especially those living in Latin America, are invited to apply for an IAHPC Scholarship to attend the XI Congress of the Latin American Association for Palliative Care taking place in Cartagena, Colombia on March 6-9, 2024. Many palliative care organizations are facing financial challenges, and the IAHPC is no exception. While current realities have forced us to trim our 2024 budget, we are committed to keeping readers of this newsletter informed. The result is a new, leaner format for the newsletter that will be tested internally in January (there will be no issue that month). Our goal is to produce useful articles for our members—who are advocates and frontline workers—using a modernized vehicle.
The newsletter began as printed copies mailed to members. Its basic structure, a series of features delivered in a single batch to subscribers, has remained the same over decades. We are grateful to the large readership of the newsletter, but also recognize that reading habits have changed. We look forward to your feedback about the new newsletter format, which will be launched in February. We hope that you will enjoy it just as much as this one, or even more!
Tidbits
In early November, timed to precede the United Nations’ convention on climate (COP-28), the World Health Organization released its Operational framework for building climate resilient and low carbon health systems. The document, a free download, “is designed to enhance the resilience of health systems while simultaneously reducing greenhouse gas emissions to help safeguard the health of communities worldwide.” It addresses 10 points over 35 pages.
