Dear Readers

Volume 24, Number 10: October 2023

Dear Readers,

To honor this year’s World Hospice & Palliative Care Day theme of "Compassionate Communities" (October 14) and to mark the United Nations' first International Day of Care and Support (October 29), the IAHPC is launching a series on Caregiving in Palliative Care.

A webinar will kick off the series, followed by courses on caregiving in palliative care that will be free for members.

We want to involve our members in presenting the webinar!! We invite those who would like to serve as one of the panelists to apply to discuss their experiences as caregivers: either as a professional or informal caregiver. See the News section for details. If you wish to participate and if you comply with the criteria, please complete the survey. We look forward to hearing from our members!

The webinar is tentatively scheduled for the second week of November. Once the panelists have been selected, we will send an announcement with all the details, including how to register.

Other palliative care organizations around the world have planned celebrations to increase awareness about compassionate communities and the importance of engaging the community in our care plans. More information about World Day—including initiatives taking place globally, photos, and resources—is available on the Worldwide Hospice Palliative Care Alliance website.

In other IAHPC news, we are in the final stages of the first step in a project to publish a Best Practices Manual that will include recommendations on the use of essential medicines for pain and palliative care included in the World Health Organization (WHO) Model List of Essential Medicines and medications included in the Lancet Essential Package. This project is a component of the agreement of work between the IAHPC and the WHO as a nonstate actor in official relations with the WHO. Selected IAHPC members will be receiving an invitation to participate. (Read more in the News section).

Keep an eye out for a late October email announcing a call for scholarship applications to the XI Congress of the Latin American Association for Palliative Care (ALCP) taking place in Cartagena, Colombia, March 6-9, 2024.

There are so many reasons to join IAHPC, or renew your membership!

Until next month,
