William Rosa, Felicia Knaul, Katherine Pettus, Eduardo Bruera, and MR Rajagopal authored a letter to the editor published online in the Journal of Clinical Oncology online on December 8. The US Cancer Pain Crisis and the Global Pain Divide: Can two wrongs make it right? notes that “...excess supply has now ironically generated restrictions in access within the United States and, with it, devastating pain-related outcomes for many groups of patients, including those with cancer.”
Gayatri Palat is lead author of The Introduction and Experiences of Methadone for Treatment of Cancer Pain at a Low-Resource Governmental Cancer Center in India, published in the November 2021 issue of the Indian Journal of Palliative Care. The article reports on a study that investigated the experience of health care professionals in a low-resource hospital who were responsible for introducing methadone as a treatment for complex cancer pain, concluding that methadone is both safe and feasible in stressful and low-resource settings.
An open access article by Luisa Arenas and eight other coauthors, Prevalence and Characteristics of Patients with Heart Failure Needing Palliative Care, was published in BMC Palliative Care in December. Despite the fact that “few hospitals and heart failure clinics offer concurrent palliative care together with life-prolonging therapies,” the results showed that among the 178 patients, 78 (44%) had palliative care needs, particularly those classified as NYHA III/IV and those over 70.
A research article by Luc Deliens, Vilma A. Tripodoro, Diane A. Dykeman-Sabado, Nineth Carolina Baltodano Algaba, and Tania Pastrana was published on December 15 by the Pan American Journal of Public Health. Feasibility of Using Death Certificates for Studying Place of Death in Latin America is a comparative study that looked at data on reported deaths in 19 countries. The conclusion was that the data sets were rated medium to high in 10 of those countries, making “it feasible to conduct an international comparative study.”
Tania Pastrana was one of three coauthors of Challenges in the Provision of Pediatric Palliative Care in Mexico: A cross-sectional Web-based survey, published in the Journal of Palliative Care in December 2021. The study identified barriers to the provision of care in low-and middle-income countries, the greatest of which were: few support teams or networks; lack of training centers and continuing education; and lack of legal, labor, and economic protections for parents who need to stop working to be with their children.
