Dear Readers,
Many new things are happening this month as we celebrate global hospice and palliative care, including: the first module of IAHPC’s revised Palliative Care Advocacy course with Dr. Katherine Pettus, the European Association for Palliative Care pre-congress workshop led by the World Health Organization (WHO), and the IAHPC/United Nations University International Institute of Global Health webinar on palliative care, among others.
WHO Director General Dr. Tedros gave this very warm and supportive endorsement of palliative care in his recorded welcome, reporting that he has written to all heads of state urging them to support the 2014 WHA 67/19 resolution on palliative care. Please follow up with your head of state at the earliest possible convenience!
It’s an exciting time to be working in the field. Some additional resources and opportunities to celebrate are:
World Hospice and Palliative Care Day, a great campaign coordinated by the Worldwide Hospice Palliative Care Alliance (WHPCA) with the support of the global palliative care community. This edition of the newsletter is packed with amazing stories, resources, and information, including a chat with Dr. Stephen Connor of the WHPCA on the World Day.
Organizations throughout the world planned celebrations to increase awareness among lay people, governments, and patients that palliative care improves the quality of life of patients and families, and that appropriate policies and funding mechanisms need to be put in place to ensure access to palliative care to those in need. More about the World Day—initiatives taking place around the globe, photos, and resources—is available on the WHPCA website.
IAHPC Photo Contest: We are super grateful for all the IAHPC members who participated in the IAHPC Photo Contest. We received excellent photos and the judges had a tough time selecting the winners. This edition features the winners of the contest and the story behind each picture.
IAHPC Recognition Awards Program: We will be relaunching this program in the next couple of days. Please keep your eyes open for an email, or read about it in November issue of this newsletter; all individuals and institutions who are IAHPC members are welcome to apply.
Until next month,
