IAHPC Membership Matters

Introducing our institutional member – Cudeca

This month we feature The Association for Cancer Care – Cudeca, which provides a full range of palliative care services as well as education and training for healthcare professionals in the south of Spain.

Dr. Marisa Martín, PhD, Cudeca CEO, and Mrs. Joan Hunt OBE, Cudeca Founder, explain what membership means to them.

The Association for Cancer Care – Cudeca (acronym of Spanish Cuidados del Cáncer) was established in 1992, before the current IAHPC was legally incorporated in 1999. *

We applied for membership in 1995 as it promised to give us important international information about what was happening in other countries on the development of palliative care.

The newsletters, with articles from many leading professionals, are circulated regularly and are a tremendous help. They raise awareness of important conferences on pain control and other symptoms and needs, as well as alerting us about grants to help students study this new approach, which has evolved from the old, sad days of people dying in great pain and suffering without the advantage of modern awareness and availability of compassionate and competent care to ease unnecessary suffering.

We read each month about the needless suffering that continues today in spite of the progress of palliative care. We must all continue to work to reduce this suffering and it is the information in journals and other publications, such as those that members can access free of charge through IAHPC membership, that promote awareness of a better end-of-life care.

We can honestly report that our membership of IAHPC has brought important news, as well as friends and a sense of belonging to the palliative care community.

Editor’s note

* Although the current IAHPC was legally incorporated in Texas in 1999, the association is much older having been established in 1980 by Dr. Josephine Magno. IAHPC’s lifetime board directors (and regular contributors to this newsletter), Dr. Derek Doyle, Dr. William Farr and Dr. Roger Woodruff, are among the founders, alongside Dr. Magno. Sri Lanka celebrates World Hospice and Palliative Care Day 2017

IAHPC member, Dr. D. K. D. Mathew, President of the Palliative Care Association of Sri Lanka, writes:

An Oration on the Theme ‘Don't leave those suffering behind’ and a Symposium on providing Holistic Palliative Care were held on 14 October 2017 to commemorate the World Hospice and Palliative Care Day 2017.

The event, held at ‘Mihilaka Medura’ – Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall, was organised by The Palliative Care Association of Sri Lanka. It was an educative programme attended by around 250 participants consisting of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, medical students and volunteers. Pictured here are some of the participants signing up for registration in the beautiful surroundings of the ‘Mihilaka Medura’ eco-friendly venue.
