Two new publications, published by the Programa Atlantes at the University of Navarra and co-sponsored by IAHPC and other organizations and institutions, analyze and report the state of palliative care in Africa and countries in the Eastern Mediterranean region

The APCA Atlas of Palliative Care in Africa and the Atlas of Palliative Care in the Eastern Mediterranean Region were presented at the 15th World Congress of the European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC) in Madrid 2017. These two books analyze and highlight the most relevant information about the state of palliative care in Africa (48 countries) and the Eastern Mediterranean Region (15 countries).

The African Atlas is a project conducted in collaboration with the African Palliative Care Association, the Arnhold Institute for Global Health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, the International Association for Hospice and Palliative Care (IAHPC), and scientifically directed and coordinated by the ATLANTES Research Program at the Institute for Culture and Society of the University of Navarra.

The Atlas of the Eastern Mediterranean is a project conducted by the Lebanese Center for Palliative Care – Balsam and the ATLANTES Research Program at the Institute for Culture and Society of the University of Navarra as scientific director, with the support from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the IAHPC.

The two publications add to the growing collection of Atlases that analyze the state of palliative care in different regions of the world, with scientific direction and support from the University of Navarra.

New book provides the latest information on establishing palliative care organization and delivery worldwide

Dr. Stephen Connor, co-author, following
the launch of ‘Building Integrated Palliative Care
Programmes and Services’ in Madrid

‘Building Integrated Palliative Care Programmes and Services’ has been published by former members of the Technical Advisory Group supporting the World Health Organization (WHO) Palliative Care Initiative. Launched at the 15th World Congress of the European Association for Palliative Care, the book provides the latest information on palliative care organization and delivery, with expert contributors drawing on examples from around the world. The authors recommend the book for use by policy-makers and practitioners to improve palliative care service delivery for people accessing care and their families.

Lack of access to palliative care and pain relief is a global public health crisis. Every year, 40 million people, their families and carers need palliative care, yet only about three million are able to access the care they need. The majority of these are adults over 60 but 6% are children.

This book is a guide to designing, implementing, and evaluating palliative care programs and services, moving a focus on integrating palliative care into mainstream healthcare systems. It includes the latest definitional, organizational, and clinical aspects of palliative care, and is a great resource for countries wanting to begin or to build palliative care.
