IAHPC membership – where it can take you!

We are delighted to share this letter from IAHPC member, Dr. Alick Kayange (pictured below), winner of the 2015 Increasing Membership Award.

“My name is Alick Kayange from Tanzania. I am a public health specialist with more than 10 years working in the field of HIV/AIDS and Home-Based Palliative Care including Children’s Palliative Care (CPC). Throughout my career, the focus has been to ensure that patients living with chronic diseases such as HIV/AIDS and cancer have access to both pharmacological and non-pharmacological care.

“I have been a member of the International Association for Hospice and Palliative Care (IAHPC) since 2011. Since then, my career in palliative care has never been the same. Supported by the IAHPC, I have been able to attend several conferences across the world where I have been able to present my work and garner more skills and experiences from different palliative care experts.

“Last year (2015), I won the first prize of $2,000 for recruiting the most IAHPC members during October. The prize supported me to attend the 5th International African Palliative Care Conference hosted by the African Palliative Care Association and the Worldwide Hospice Palliative Care Alliance held at Speke Resort, Munyonyo, Kampala, Uganda from 16-19 August, 2016. The theme of the conference was differentiated care for diverse communities.

“Through this meeting, I was challenged by different presenters including the presentation from Dr. Faith Mwangi-Powell on how the world can deliver palliative care services differently to achieve different and better outcomes to patients in our communities. It is high time for individuals, partners, collaborators, organizations and funders to come up with new ways of doing things to get different results.

“Once again, I would like to thank IAHPC for coming up with these awards which not only support an individual, but support the whole community where the recipient lives and the whole world at large.”

Asante Sana (Thank you very much)

Alick Austine Kayange (MD, M.Phil. ICH)
