St. Christopher’s Hospice shares palliative care expertise with China

A partnership between St. Christopher’s in London, UK, and the Living Will Promotion Association (LWPA), based in Beijing, was officially formed in April with the aim to support the development of skilled end-of-life care in China.

The LWPA is a voluntary organization that promotes Advance Care Planning; a key way of improving care for people as they near the end of life by recording their needs and preferences to ensure the care they receive meets their wishes. It identified the need to establish a program of learning to improve support available to those nearing the end of life. Through the UK Department of Trade and Industry, LWPA approached St. Christopher’s Education Centre, based in South London, for guidance and expertise. Together, they have designed a strategy of learning for senior clinicians in China, which builds on St. Christopher’s expertise and focuses on delivering expert and compassionate end-of-life care that can be rolled out across the country.

Signing the Memorandum of Understanding at St. Christopher’s: (L to R) Taotao Shi (Vice secretary general at LWPA),Yuan Quin (Expert Committee at LWPA), Yuping Luo (Vice chairman of LWPA), Morgan Jones (Chair of Trustees at St. Christopher’s), Liz Bryan (Director of Education and Training at St. Christopher’s), Shaun O’Leary (Joint Chief Executive at St. Christopher’s and Max Glover (Department of Trade and Industry).

To mark the start of this partnership, representatives from the LWPA met at St. Christopher’s on Thursday 7 April to sign a Memorandum of Understanding. St. Christopher’s aims to work closely with senior clinicians in China to empower them to deliver culturally appropriate education and training using a ‘train the trainer’ model. The hospice will also provide additional learning and ongoing support online.

Heather Richardson, Joint Chief Executive at St. Christopher’s, said:

“We’re delighted to be working with the LWPA and clinicians in China to develop skilled and compassionate end of life care of the highest quality. At St. Christopher’s our vision is of a world where all dying people and those closest to them have access to the care and support they need, when and wherever they need it. By working with other healthcare professionals around the globe, such as our partners in China, we hope to make this vision a reality and we very much look forward to leading this exciting project.”
