A special thank you from the IAHPC

Dear friend of IAHPC,

In the wake of Thanksgiving and as Christmas approaches, we want to thank you for your past contribution to the International Association for Hospice and Palliative Care (IAHPC) and ask you to consider once again making a donation to support our mission and bring relief to patients with palliative care needs around the world.

You may know that in spite of the progress, thousands of patients and their families still do not have access to adequate care. Thanks to donations we received from people like you, IAHPC has been able to implement strategies to improve access to medications and train hundreds of physicians and nurses to develop skills and knowledge in hospice and palliative care.

Below are some examples of strategies IAHPC implemented during 2015.

For example, we implemented a workshop with prescribers, pharmacists and government representatives to help improve access to pain relief treatment in Bolivia. In the workshop we helped the physicians and providers identify the barriers that interfere with their ability to prescribe and dispense strong opioids for pain relief and palliative care and take the necessary actions to eliminate these barriers. In this photo, IAHPC Executive Director, Liliana De Lima, presents the objectives of the workshop and opens the discussions.

This year IAHPC also implemented the second phase of Opioid Price Watch (OPW), a project to monitor the availability of and accessibility to analgesics around the world. The goal of OPW is to present information on the availability and affordability of pain treatment. The red dots on the map represent the places where oral morphine was not available. In many countries where it is available, patients have to pay out of pocket more than the equivalent of a month’s wage.

This year IAHPC worked with faith communities and NGOs in Africa and India, to discuss and implement strategies to improve access to care. In this photo, Dr. Katherine Pettus, IAHPC Advocacy Officer, met with the Interreligious Council in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

IAHPC board members worked with government representatives to improve policies and increase access to hospice and palliative care treatment around the globe. In this picture, Dr. Eric Krakauer (right) meets with the Chairperson of the ‘panchayat’ or local government, her staff, and officials of the Jeeva Karunnya Palliative Home Care Program in Kerala, India.

Help us continue helping other patients in countries around the world.

Making a donation is simple, either through the IAHPC website or by sending a check to our mailing address:
