Palliative Care Leaders in Developing Countries

This section features participants to the International Leadership Development Initiative and the International Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program at the Institute for Palliative Medicine at San Diego Hospice, under the leadership of Doctors Frank Ferris, Shannon Moore and Holly Yang.

We have created this space in our Newsletter to recognize their work, effort and commitment to improving palliative care in their countries.

Urska Lunder, MD - Slovenia

A graduate of the International Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program and the International Leadership Development Initiative at San Diego Hospice and the Institute for Palliative Medicine.

Dr. Urska Lunder is Attending Physician at University Clinic for Respiratory Diseases, Golnik, and Director of the Palliative Care Development Institute, Ljubljana, Slovenia.

With her colleagues, Dr Lunder, she founded the Palliative Care Development Institute Ljubljana in 2000. She was appointed as a professional lead in a pilot project for the Ministry of Health for implementing high-quality palliative care into three regions in Slovenia, 2009-2010. She was also the national lead and a collaborator in the EU 7th Framework Support/Collaboration Project – OPCARE9 with aims to optimize care for cancer patients in the last days of life, 2008-2011.

Dr. Lunder is particularly interested in communication in palliative care, where she has developed innovative teaching models with experiential interactive learning and role playing. Through her work at the Palliative Care Development Institute Ljubljana, she is committed to establishing palliative care teams and units in Slovenia’s major health care institutions.

Sofía Bunge, MD - Argentina

A graduate of the International Leadership Development Initiative at San Diego Hospice and the Institute for Palliative Medicine.

Dr. Sofia Bunge is the Education Coordinator of the Programa Argentino de Medicina Paliativa - Fundacion Femeba (PAMP-FF) in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She is the Medical Director of Hospice Casa de la Bondad, Manos Abiertas Foundation, Buenos Aires.

Dr. Bunge is in the faculty of the online palliative care interdisciplinary hybrid courses in Spanish for the Latin American region. She helped design the curriculum and is in the faculty for the palliative care elective component for 4th, 5th and 6th year medical students at the School of Medicine, Universidad Austral, Argentina.

Dr. Bunge is co-author of a chapter on palliative care in the Textbook for Surgeons, published by the Argentine Surgery Association, and the Palliative Care Guidelines for Primary Care Physicians, published by REMEDIAR + Redes.
