Clarisse MUSANABAGANWA

Travel date: November 16, 2017

Name of Meeting/Event/Activity: 4th Congrès International Francophone de Soins Palliatif

Origin: Kigali, Rwanda / Destination: Geneva, Switzerland

How was this meeting/activity helpful to you?

This meeting was very helpful to me because I have been able to learn about global progress on the promotion and development of Palliative care concept and its integration in the health system. In addition, this has opened opportunity for me to share our best practices in delivering palliative care and it was a platform for me to learn from others the new approaches that should be adopted in our context to strengthen the quality of health care delivery in terms of palliative care program. In addition, during the meeting I learned more about the gaps of integrating Palliative in other public health programs linked with infectious diseases such as HIV.

How will you new knowledge & acquired skills help in furthering your work in hospice and palliative care in your program/city/ or country?

As Rwanda has already made tremendous steps in integration of Palliative care in the health system, the conference has opened my mind to think about palliative care program sustainability. Moreover, the skills and knowledge that I gained from the conference has oriented me to give much attention on the quality of palliative care services in Africa and also to think about how vulnerable groups such as children can be considered with special care while delivering palliative care services. In addition, the skills and networks gained during the meeting have helped to think about advocacy of prioritizing enhancement of public health perspectives in Rwanda as one of the strategy to tackle the challenges of palliative care delivery such as limited financial and human resource capacity. It was also an opportunity for me to build networks for the benefit of Palliative care in African context particularly In Rwanda.

How IAHPC Traveling Scholarship be improved in order to help other future traveling scholars?

The IAHPC sponsorship is one of the wise strategies to improve global Palliative Care delivery and advocacy. I think, I would encourage to strengthen the platform in terms of funding as a way to enable possibilities of funding more travels in order to provide more opportunities of sharing the experiences with others.
