Traveling Scholars Program Report

Fátima Rodriguez, Social Worker

Travel date: March 6, 2024

Name of Meeting/Event/Activity: XI Congreso Latino americano de Cuidados Paliativos

Origin: Santa Tecla, El Salvador / Destination: Cartagena, Colombia

How will you new knowledge & acquired skills help in furthering your work in hospice and palliative care in your program/city/ or country?

I have a topic planned for the next congress, thanks to a comment from a participant, and I will just take it into account to carry out my research.

What were the three main takeaways from this conference/event

Volunteers are an important part of the palliative care team.
We need to get funding so that hospices are free as they have been from the beginning.
We need continuing education to provide good care

Did you attend a session or workshop on advocacy? If yes, how do plan to build or improve collaborative relationships with your current government officials?

I did attend one of the City Cancer Challenge Foundation, where some countries presented the first part of their project, which was a diagnosis of palliative care in the capital city of that country. So I understood that to advance any issue of palliative care, you must first make a situational diagnosis, with that we can begin to present it for support in a hospice in any of the branches: medications, healthcare, education, among others.

Did you attend a session or workshop on education in palliative care? If applicable, describe how you plan to enact changes to curricula in your academic institution

If I attended one on a KOLB method that is based on orienting the teaching topics to the different learning styles of the students, not all those attending a class learn in the same way, so I must do activities oriented to all the ways of learning.

Do you have any suggestions on how you think the IAHPC Scholarship Program can be improved to help future scholars?

I am really grateful for the scholarship, if it were not for that scholarship I would not have attended my first conference from which I learned a lot, THANK YOU IAHPC
