Traveling Scholars Program Report

Stella Mwari Rithara, Ms.

Travel date: May 23, 2019

Name of Meeting/Event/Activity: 16th World Congress of the European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC)

Origin: Nairobi, Kenya / Destination: Berlin, Germany

How was this meeting/activity helpful to you?

The meeting was educative and helpful to me and my colleagues back home as i will give CME. Listening at children palliative care was a eye opener for me as this is my major challenge in teaching peadiatric palliative care. One presentation-challenges in peadiatric palliative care and accompanying the child at End of Life were well presented and i learnt a lot.

How will you new knowledge & acquired skills help in furthering your work in hospice and palliative care in your program/city/ or country?

I plan to give feedback to my colleague through a CME especially palliative care lecturers. Being a palliative care tutor i will put into practice my experience through teaching and look forward this will improve our palliative students knowledge and skills in caring for the communities they work for.

How IAHPC Traveling Scholars Program be improved in order to help other future traveling scholars?

At the moment IAHPC doing well and the organization was perfect during EAPC. Maybe in future we have two hours sit in in afternoon together and share our experiences and learn from each other on how to recruit more members to ensure we recruit as many as possible to improve palliative care across and increase travelling scholarship.

Narrative summary highlighting the needs and challanges you face

Our main challenge is training/reading materials but i thank IAHPC for their well equipped website which has been my reference in most cases. Thank to the travelling scholarship i was awarded as i learnt a lot and has an opportunity to meet people like Shaila Payne from Observatory End of Life-UK and Julia Downing. it was so healthy to interact and in my children palliative care interest i was able to connect with Julia and will be receiving book, journals. the presentation were good and reading materials provided which i carried for references, i also loved and carried pharmaceutical press-digital and print resources with several reference books so rich.
