For the Association of Palliative Care of Colombia-ASOCUPAC which is committed to the strengthening of Palliative Care in our country through joint work with institutions and competent national and international authorities and especially health professionals, participation in the IX Latin American Congress of Palliative Care of the Latin American Association of Palliative Care (ALCP) in Santiago, Chile through the IAHPC Scholarship was the opportunity to climb a step in the work we have been doing and it was a great moment to make ourselves known with the most of 800 people who participated in the Congress, many links with the ALCP were strengthened, we supported them in what was within our reach and undoubtedly our stand was one of the most visited, all our partners committed to leave in search of the people and talk about our institution to position it.
How will you new knowledge & acquired skills help in furthering your work in hospice and palliative care in your program/city/ or country?
For the Association of Palliative Care of Colombia-ASOCUPAC which is committed to the strengthening of Palliative Care in our country through joint work with institutions and competent national and international authorities and especially health professionals, participation in the IX Latin American Congress of Palliative Care of the Latin American Association of Palliative Care (ALCP) in Santiago, Chile through the IAHPC Scholarship was the opportunity to climb a step in the work we have been doing and it was a great moment to make ourselves known with the most of 800 people who participated in the Congress, many links with the ALCP were strengthened, we supported them in what was within our reach and undoubtedly our stand was one of the most visited, all our partners committed to leave in search of the people and talk about our institution to position it. ASOCUPAC works in the national territory to create strategic alliances to provide education to the professionals of our country as one of the fundamental engines to offer quality palliative care to patients and families. The data provided by the Latin American observatory shows that the calculation in Colombia of new cases of patients with palliative needs amounts to 250,000 per year and at this time there are approximately 100 to 150 specialists in this area, which does not cover even 1% of the need of the country. For this reason it is a priority that ASOCUPAC grows, strengthens and trains all those interested in the health teams that are faced with the management of this type of patients in order to generate not only care with the highest quality standards but also by having health personnel adequately trained and qualified for this purpose. Thanks to the participation in the IX Latin American Congress of Palliative Care of the Latin American Association of Palliative Care (ALCP) the association Palliative Care of Colombia ASOCUPAC managed to advance in the links with other institutions in Latin American and European level with which the work of make our institution known and strengthen institutional links. For this reason, we managed to identify and converse with some international speakers that we want to have in our next congress to be held in the month of April in the City of Cali Colombia, also one of our greatest achievements was the conclusion of a teamwork with Ecancer.org who identified with our work and growth agreed to support us in the II International Congress of Colombia 2018. Ecancer is an international non-profit organization which has a virtual medical platform for free education of Palliative Care for Latin America. For this platform they have asked for our academic support and strongly wish to support our congress next year. In order to support each other, Dr. Jorge Duruame, responsible for the organization of the Virtual Modules and its content in Latin America, has asked us to participate as guests of the 1st Symposium Ecancer of Palliative Care in Buenos Aires, Argentina on September 6 and 7 , which we will also support from ASOCUPAC with the knowledge acquired from our first congress in Colombia.
How IAHPC Traveling Scholars Program be improved in order to help other future traveling scholars?
I think the scholarship is very good for events! I think we could think about exchanges for the Latin American Associations, it would be a great experience to be able to access scholarships that promote exchange with other countries and to know the "In Situ" experience of other associations that are more consolidated in countries with recognized progress in palliative care in order to strengthen our work.
