Dr Bhubaneswar Borooah Cancer Institute (BBCI) has started the Palliative care Unit in 2003 with the help of Guwahati Pain and Palliative care Society. Palliative care unit is rendering services to the patients of entire North Eastern region of India in the form of Out-patient, In-patient and Day Care. A Home Care Service is also available on everyday basis for the immovable patients within a radius of 70 kms of the Institute. The outpatient department of Palliative Medicine works everyday through the week and is co-located with oncology services. It provides early, concurrent and supportive care to ambulatory patients and the responsibility is shared with the primary oncology consultants. Early and concurrent palliative care is provided for all patients irrespective of the intent of treatment (radical or palliative).
The Department is conducting One year certificate course in Palliative Medicine for Doctors and Social Workers as well as the Certificate Course in Essentials of Palliative Medicine under IAPC and conduct clinical training for National Fellowship trainee under IPM, Calicut.
