Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement (SVYM)* initiated the Palliative Care Program in 2009, as a continuum of care for people living with HIV. Dr Nandini, a conscientious palliative care physician, guided the team led by Dr M A Balasubramanya, Secretary and Anesthesiologist. Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement started in 1984 by a group of medicos led by Dr. R Balasubramaniam has its headquarters in Mysuru district of Karnataka State in Southern India. Acting as a key promoter-facilitator in the community’s efforts towards self-reliance and empowerment, SVYM is developing local, innovative and cost-effective solutions to sustain community-driven progress. Today, SVYM's 9 institutions and 40 programs in the sectors of Health, Education, Socio Economic Empowerment, Training and Research serves 3 million indigenous tribes, rural and urban poor all over Karnataka. SVYM played a pivotal role in drafting the State's Palliative Care Policy approved by the Govt in Aug 2016. It also initiated the State's first comprehensive Palliative Care Program on a Public Private Partnership model at Mysore Medical College and Research Institute. It has now extended the program to the neighbouring district of Hassan too.
