Learning objectives 1 | Course: Introduction to Children's Palliative Care. By the end of the course learners should be able to: - Define children's palliative care. - Explore the differences between palliative care in adults and in children. - Be familiar with the global need for palliative care in children. |
Learning objectives 2 | Course: Communicating with children and emotional issues. By the end of the course learners should be able to: - Apply the principles of effective communication when working with children, selecting age-appropriate techniques/activities to enhance communication - Demonstrate an understanding of children’s age-related understanding of death - Effectively manage the process of breaking bad news about diagnosis and prognosis of incurable illness to a child and family - Demonstrate competence in emotionally supporting a child who has been given a diagnosis of a life-threatening illness - Appreciate the impact that the illness may have on the child’s schooling, friends, appearance, the future, sexuality and spirituality - Demonstrate knowledge of specific complicating issues and identify emotional issues for children living with life-threatening illness that are transmitted or inherited. - Understand the complications arising from multiple sick family members, orphan-hood and child-headed households. |

By the end of the course learners should have a good understanding of and approach to: - the principles of end of life care - prognostication and the identification of end of life - the management of distressing symptoms/events at the end of life - artificial nutrition and hydration at the end of life - advance care planning, assessment and management tools |
Description | Welcome to ICPCN’s e-learning programme. Our courses are helpful to professionals and lay people working with children living with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions and their families. We have developed several short courses as part of a longer-term strategy of providing e-learning programmes on all aspects of children’s palliative care. Some or all of the courses are presently available in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Serbian, Mandarin, Dutch, Czech, Vietnamese, Farsi, Malay, Bengali and Hindi. On successful completion of all assessments attached to modules within each course, you will be able to download your certificate of completion. All courses are endorsed by the University of South Wales. |
