Learning objectives 1 To demonstrate an understanding of the scope of palliative and hospice care
To understand the true meaning of palliative as "an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families through the prevention, early identification and impeccable assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, physical, psychosocial, and spiritual’’.
To understand the facets of palliative care, who needs palliative care services, what comprises the palliative and hospice care teams, where the two services can be provided as well as the similarities and differences between the two.
Learning objectives 2 To show ability to communicate and deliver care effectively within a multidisciplinary team environment.
To develop and apply correct communication skills in counseling, prognostication, communicating serious news, and develop a plan of care with patients and their families.
To apply an holistic approach to an individual’s symptom assessment and be able to make appropriate referrals and network with others clinicians.
To demonstrate professional behavior and good interpersonal relationship in all interactions with patients and the health care team.
To be able to provide medical education to patients and caregivers on appropriate use, side effects, and risks associated with the use of opioids and other medications commonly used in palliative and hospice care.
To be able to utilize the available consultancy services to achieve the holistic care of patients.
To provide leadership and advocacy for palliative care.
Learning objectives 3 To demonstrate competence and proficiency in using online resources to research medical literature and concepts in palliaitve care, synthesize material and teach the key concepts researched to others.
To provide ongoing education to team members and as outreach to clinic and hospital staff, educational institutions, and the lay public on the importance of community based palliative care services and expel any misconceptions or myths related to Hospice and palliative care.
To ensure maximum incorporation of palliative care at all levels of health care service delivery by participating in the design and implementation of the palliative care policy, model and structure meetings with other health Care decision makers.
Description The Higher Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery in Hospice and Palliative Care is an 18 months Hands-on Training program housed at College of Health Sciences, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital and is accredited by the Clinical Officer Council and Ministry of Health, Kenya. Applicants must meet the following requirements: Be registered with the Clinical Officers’ Council, (2) Years experience after internship, KCSE mean grade of C (plain) and above or equivalent and Recommendation letter from employer/supervisor if employed.
