Learning objectives 1 | By the end of a Patch Academy course students will have a clearer understanding of the role and value of key aspects of paediatric palliative care in ensuring the best possible quality of life for babies, children and adolescents with life-threatening and life-limiting illnesses and conditions and their families. They will learn the value of good communication and how to impart difficult but significant news to patients' family members in a way that is empathetic and clear. Courses provide information on holistic assessment, psychosocial and spiritual care and support and palliative care planning as well as an understanding of medical ethics and decision making in paediatric palliative care. Courses include those on pain assessment and symptom management, end-of-life support for children and their families as well as a course on grief, loss and bereavement support for families when a child has died. |
Learning objectives 2 | Patch Academy courses on the physical care of paediatric patients include the assessment and management of pain in children, symptom control and end-of-life care. |
Learning objectives 3 | Patch Academy courses also include information on how to work well within a palliative care multi-disciplinary team, how to manage conflict and the importance of self care. |
Description | Patch Academy is an online training platform that has been created as an educational resource for all members of the multidisciplinary team providing care to children with life-threatening and life-limiting illnesses and conditions and to their families. The certificate courses are open to anyone with a desire to know more about the practice and delivery of neonatal, perinatal and children’s palliative care including paediatricians, doctors, nurses, social workers, pastors and other spiritual leaders, psychologists, teachers, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, art and music therapists. All Patch Academy courses are accredited with General and/or Ethics CPD points from the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa and some are accredited with CPD points from the South African Council for Social Service Professionals. Patch Academy courses are suited for individual learning and provide stimulating multi-media content and information for those seeking an interactive and immersive learning experience. Those undertaking our courses have access to a dedicated course coordinator. The courses are particularly relevant to South Africa and sub–Saharan Africa but also have global relevance. They offer an interactive and immersive experience and encourage participants to reflect on case studies as well as their own experiences caring for children with palliative care needs. |
