Learning objectives 1 To prepare fellows to provide evidence-based interdisciplinary palliative care to the full spectrum of patients with advanced illness.
Learning objectives 2 Fellows will be able to function as a hospice medical director, participate in a palliative care consult service, provide outpatient and home-based support to palliative care patients, and support care in a dedicated hospice or palliative care inpatient unit.
Learning objectives 3 Fellows will also be able to provide administrative leadership support to a palliative care program, effectively liaison with other specialties in supporting the program, and provide effective teaching to physicians in training, primary physicians, staff, and the community as necessary
Description Summa Health System’s Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship was instituted in 2006 and was in the first group of hospice and palliative medicine fellowship programs to receive accreditation through the ACGME. The program is based in the Department of Internal Medicine and is one year in length. Training includes focused research time and the expectation that Hospice and Palliative Fellows assume a “junior faculty” role during rotations. The fellows are directly involved in teaching medical students, residents and allied health professionals.
