Background

Professor Peter Hudson is Director of the Centre for Palliative Care (St Vincent’s Hospital and Collaborative Centre of The University of Melbourne, Australia), Professor (Hon.) at The University of Melbourne and Professor of Palliative Care at Queen’s University, Belfast (UK).

Peter is a registered nurse with approximately twenty years’ experience in palliative care practice, education and research. He is a Board member of the International Association of Hospice and Palliative Care. Peter is a co-founder of the International Palliative Care Family Carer Research Collaboration (www.ipcfrc.centreforpallcare.org), which operates under the auspices of the European Association of Palliative Care (EAPC) and is co-leader of a EAPC Taskforce aimed at enhancing support provided to family carers. Peter has published approximately 40 articles in peer reviewed International journals. In 2009, he co-edited a book focusing on ways in which healthcare professionals provide evidence-based support to family carers of patients diagnosed with life-threatening illness.

The Centre for Palliative Care (www.centreforpallcare.org) has a state-wide role in palliative care education and research in Victoria, and focuses on the development of evidence-based practice, through research and education with networks and collaborative projects extending nationally and internationally. As Director, Peter’s role is to develop a program of research covering palliative care service delivery, psychosocial support and symptom management. He has a particular interest in developing and evaluating strategies to improve the psychosocial support for families affected by advanced disease. He also coordinates the Specialist Certificate in Palliative Care (via The University of Melbourne), a multi-disciplinary course aimed at preparing healthcare professionals for specialist palliative care provision.
