A new Interdisciplinary Center for Palliative Medicine has been inaugurated on April 27th, 2004, at Munich University Hospital. The Center is run jointly by the Departments of Anaesthesiology, Neurology, and Oncology. The two-story building hosts a 10-bed dedicated inpatient unit, a hospital support team (which has been operating since 1999), and an Education Center for undergraduate and postgraduate multiprofessional teaching in Palliative Care. In 2003, the University of Munich was the first German university to introduce Palliative Care as a mandatory course for all medical students. The research activities of the Center are focused on (i) psychosocial and spiritual aspects of individual quality of life, (ii) palliative care in neurological diseases, (iii) assessment of quality of care and service provision (including pediatrics and geriatrics), (iv) advance directives and end-of-life decisions, and (v) evaluation of teaching courses. The faculty comprises Prof. Gian Domenico Borasio, Dr. Claudia Bausewein MSc, Dr. Antje Beyer, and Bernadette Fittkau-Tönnesmann MPH.

Note: The university received the IAHPC Institutional Award in 2003. |
