Dear Readers

Volume 23, Number 6: June 2022

Dear Readers,

Happy summer! In pursuit of IAHPC’s vision of a world free from health-related suffering, and to best serve our members, we are happy to announce several new educational resources.

Pain assessment course

Lukas and Dr. Ebtesam (Sammi) Ahmed, will teach the IAHPC Comprehensive Course on Pain Assessment and Management, designed for physicians, nurses, and pharmacists.

The course will address basic principles associated with pain pathogenesis and assessment, effective pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment options, and appropriate therapeutic regimens. Students will gain advanced knowledge about how to manage pain associated with specific disease states most often encountered in palliative care and hospice settings. The course will also address strategies to prevent diversion and nonmedical use.

The 10-module course, beginning June 21 and running through July 21, will be held on Zoom. Each module will be presented live and also recorded for on-demand viewing. Registration is required for each module. Information about the course now available includes the topic and date of each module.

Students wishing to receive a certificate at the end of the course must complete all modules, including three modules of the IAHPC Advocacy Course: the Introduction, and Modules 2 and 3 on advocating for access to internationally controlled essential medicines.

We hope that you will take advantage of this learning opportunity. Sign up or renew if you are not a member.

IAHPC office change & our new phone number

After seven years with the IAHPC, Genevieve (Gena) Napier, Senior Officer for IAHPC Programs and Projects, has left the organization to become director of Continuing Medical Education at the Memorial Hermann Health System in Texas. We are grateful for Gena’s service during her tenure at the IAHPC and wish her good luck in her new job. We have taken steps to ensure that things continue to run smoothly, but after many years with Gena doing so much, we may encounter some bumps along the way. So, thank you in advance for your patience and understanding while we adjust! In the meantime, if you have any questions or need any help, contact The IAHPC Team. Also, please take note of our new phone number: +1 (832) 623-7650.

Until next month,

Lukas and Liliana

Editor’s note

By Alison Ramsey

It is farewell, thank you, and best wishes on your new job to Genevieve Napier, IAHPC’s Senior Operations Officer. Genevieve has deep knowledge of the individual members and member institutions, which has allowed her to compile the monthly feature Members’ Impact, a section that celebrates your accomplishments.

Members’ Impact contributed to IAHPC’s strategic pillar of “information dissemination,” which is key to building a global palliative care movement. As Gena will no longer be running through her mental and physical files to pluck out members’ names from recent journals, it is up to you to alert us to your own (or other members’) publications, journal articles, awards, blogs, videos, successful projects or presentations, keynote addresses, courses, etc. If you don’t share your accomplishments with us, Members’ Impact will vanish. So after telling your partner, colleagues, parents, children, and friends about your accomplishment, contact any one of us!

FYI, Gena also compiled Members in This Month’s Newsletter, which is under review.

In other news, we decided at our May newsletter meeting to reduce the bulk of the newsletter for more pleasant reading. The following decisions have been put into immediate effect:

With these changes, the IAHPC Newsletter remains focused on our four pillars: advocacy, communication, education, and research.

I welcome readers’ input on the newsletter, these changes, and any ideas you have for future issues. Don’t be shy about emailing me! The IAHPC Newsletter exists for you.
