Traveling Scholars Program Report

Sonia Patricia Carreno Moreno, Professor

Travel date: May 23, 2019

Name of Meeting/Event/Activity: 16th World Congress of the European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC)

Origin: Bogota, Colombia / Destination: Berlin, Germany

How was this meeting/activity helpful to you?

Through the central conferences, oral presentations and posters, I was able to have a global overview of the research and practice of palliative care in the world. This information is useful to transfer the evidence to the Colombian context. On the other hand, I met several colleagues who are dedicated to my area of research and practice, which will allow me to keep in touch with the right people who can give me feedback about palliative care in Colombia.

How will you new knowledge & acquired skills help in furthering your work in hospice and palliative care in your program/city/ or country?

In the area of education, I will apply the knowledge and skills acquired in the EAPC 2019, in the strengthening of my classes of palliative care in the University. I will also give additional palliative care classes for health professionals interested in the subject and apply what I have learned in classes of the palliative care course, which is offered in a continuous education mode to health and social sciences professionals. In the area of advocacy, I will share what I have learned with the society of professionals in palliative care of which I am a part, seeking to defend and promote respect for the rights of patients and caregivers. I will also mobilize my social networks in this area.

How IAHPC Traveling Scholars Program be improved in order to help other future traveling scholars?

In general, I consider that everything related to the scholarship was perfect, timely and useful.

Narrative summary highlighting the needs and challanges you face

Colombia is a country of medium income, with very good health professionals, but with low development of palliative care, with the knowledge of EAPC 2019, I will help to break the gaps and to innovate in palliative care in Colombia.
