First of all, I would like to take this opportunity to thank IAHPC for supporting me with a travelling scholarship that enabled me attend the 15th World Congress of the European Association for Palliative Care - “Progressing Palliative Care” that took place in the beautiful city of Madrid, Spain from 18th to 20th May, 2017. As a palliative care provider, the EAPC 2017 meeting equipped with knowledge in different areas such as innovations in psychological interventions, new developments in spiritual care, plan and to perform randomized controlled trials in palliative care, resources for research, education, and implementation in spiritual care, primary and community care and many other more. In addition, attending this conference helped me to take the work we are doing here in Tanzania to a much wider audience, and to share experiences and knowledge with colleagues from across the world. The skills acquired will help me implement my daily palliative care activities at Uhuru Medical Centre, a local organization based in Tanzania with a focus on psychosocial care and family-centered palliative care.
Despite the significant work done in Tanzania, there is a lot that needs to be done regarding palliative care due to the high burden of HIV/AIDS and an ongoing increase in the burden of the non-communicable diseases. Through knowledge and experience garnered during the conference, I will ensure Uhuru Medical Centre become the centre of excellence in Palliative care service delivery in Tanzania in collaboration with other palliative care experts.
To use existing peoples who have been IAHPC members for at least 3 years as IAHPC ambassadors of palliative care in their respective countries. Ambassadors will ensure all health care workers have awareness regarding palliative care of which in turn many more professionals will join IAHPC or other local palliative care association. In addition, revenue collected from membership fees will help other more members benefit from IAHPC traveling scholarship. As a testimony, since I joined IAHPC, more than 5 members I managed to recruit have already benefited from the traveling scholarship and they have become instrumentals in the facilities where they are working.
