Traveling Scholars Program Report

Yuriko Nakashima Paniagua, MD

Travel date: May 18, 2016

Name of Meeting/Event/Activity: 2nd ICPCN Conference: Children\'s Palliative Care

Origin: Zapopan, Mexico / Destination: Buenos Aires, Argentina

How was this meeting/activity helpful to you?

Attend to this meeting it was a really nice enriched experience. I had the opportunity to share the experience form different teams around the world and how they face the troubles that they have in their countries in the palliative care field, this gave me more tools to build my own strategies to confront ours. As a health professional it\'s very important to have a continues education. In this great conference I could be with the most recognized experts in the field of pediatric palliative care and children pain around the world, that was really one of the best things of this event. They kindly shared their knowledge with all of us

How will you new knowledge & acquired skills help in furthering your work in hospice and palliative care in your program/city/ or country?

It was a really interesting meeting to me, because I could interact with a lot of palliative care professionals from different places around the world. Knowing this different point of view increased my perspective and enrich my knowledge that would be traduce into a better comprehension to discuss cases in my hospital.

How IAHPC Traveling Scholars Program be improved in order to help other future traveling scholars?

I think the IAHPC is doing a wonderful job. Maybe you could help more health professionals from developing countries to attend to different congress/meeting if they could make they applications/reports in the language that the meeting is (from non English-speaking). I have known some doctors/nurses that they really want to apply to the scholarship but they don\'t speak/write a very good English (mainly Spanish and Portuguese speaking). I know that this maybe could be quite difficult but you can help more people. Thank you very, very much for all your help.

Narrative summary highlighting the needs and challanges you face

I am the Pediatric Palliative Care Coordinator at Hospital Civil “Dr. Juan I. Menchaca” a teaching hospital, since 2005 in Guadalajara, Mexico. Our palliative care population has increased more than 200% since 2010. Last year, our interdisciplinary team provides services to about 530 pediatric patients and their family members. Attended to this conference gave me the opportunity, to built more international networks for education, research and training, to share our experience with other low income countries that might help to improve their access to opioids and pediatric palliative care services (introduce the organizations and people that have been working in this field to them, and gave them some advice to do it “easily”) to learn more about bioethics at the end of life and share/compare different points of view from different parts of the word. Thank you so much IAHPC for giving me this great opportunity to be part of such a wonderful event, please continue helping our countries because without resources like you it would be to much more difficult to have a quality palliative care in low income countries.
