Message from the Chair
and Executive Director

Dear readers:

Hello to all. This month we highlight three important issues:

First, this year’s World Hospice and Palliative Care Day will take place on October 9 th. The World Day is celebrated the second Saturday of every year and it is an initiative of the Worldwide Palliative Care Alliance (WPCA).

The Aims of the World Day are:

  • To share the vision to increase the availability of hospice and palliative care throughout the world by creating opportunities to speak out about the issues;
  • To raise awareness and understanding of the needs - medical, social, practical, spiritual - of people living with life limiting diagnoses and their families; and
  • To raise funds to support and develop hospice and palliative care services around the world.

The World Day is a call for action that asks people to get involved by organizing an event in their communities to raise awareness about hospice and palliative care, to highlight how good working partnerships between service providers, governments, hospitals, people living with the disease, carers and community members are vital to the provision of quality care.

Every World Day has a distinctive theme: the theme for 2010 is “Sharing the Care”.

We invite all of you to organize events to celebrate World Day in your hospice, community, hospital, palliative care setting or any other place you think might serve as a venue.

Second, IAHPC in partnership with the Open Society Institute (OSI) gave a donation to the European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC) to support the travel of individuals from developing countries to attend the EAPC 6 th Research Congress in Palliative Care, that will take place June 10 th – 12 th in Glasgow, UK. A joint committee composed of EAPC and IAHPC members selected the following five grantees from a list of 17 applicants:

  • Zipporah Ali, National Coordinator, Kenya Hospices and Palliative Care Association from Nairobi, Kenya
  • Paulina Andryszak, psychologist and clinical research coordinator at Dom Sue Ryder Association in Bydgoszca, Poland
  • Jovita Demskyte a nursing teacher at Kaunas University of Medicine and nurse at Kaunas Nursing Hospital/Hospice, in Kaunas, Lithuania
  • Stella Rithara Mwari, Clinical Palliative Care at Nairobi Hospice, Kenya
  • Elena Vvedenskaya, Physician, Palliative Care Programme Manager, Assistant Professor Regional Center for AIDS Control, State Medical University, Nizhny Novgorod, Russia.

Congratulations to the grantees – we hope that they will enjoy the congress and that their participation will provide them with additional tools and skills to improve research in their countries. We look forward to their reports after they return.

Third, last month we sent an invitation to individuals to apply for grants for travel to the18th International Congress in Montréal on October 5-8, 2010. Many applicants have responded enthusiastically. This edition of the Newsletter includes the announcement with the criteria and instructions on how to apply. We look forward to more submissions.

Best wishes to all and until next month,
