Message
from the Chair
and Executive Director
Dear readers:
We hope this New Year brings peace and health and moments to cherish with your loved ones.
We have some important announcements regarding our board of directors:
On December 31st, two of our Board members completed their terms: Doctor Anne Merriman from Uganda and Doctor Jacek Luckak from Poland. Please join us in thanking them for their contributions to IAHPC and their efforts in helping the organization achieve its mission. Both of them are committed to the development of hospice and palliative care in Eastern Europe and Africa and have contributed extensively to its growth in the past two decades. It has been an honor for us to have worked with these members of the Board.
We are proud to announce that the following three directors have been bestowed the title of IAHPC Lifetime Board Members due their distinct commitment, service, leadership, vision and contribution to the IAHPC since its inception. The honorary title of Lifetime Board Members entitles these members to lifetime Director positions and benefits from the IAHPC:
Derek Doyle (UK)

We welcome these extraordinary leaders in palliative care to our board and look forward to their participation as directors of our organization.
Three of our current board members were re-elected to the Board:
David Currow (Australia) is the Chief Executive Officer of Cancer Australia and Professor of Palliative and Supportive Services at Flinders University
Kin-Sang Chan (Hong Kong) is currently the Chief of Service of the Department of Medicine of Haven of Hope Hospital, Honorary Associate Professor of the University of Hong Kong and Honorary Adjunct Associate professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Faith Mwangi-Powell (Uganda) is the current president of the African Association for Palliative Care (APCA).
Doctors Currow, Chan and Mwangi-Powell have been extremely helpful in supporting IAHPC and our programs. We are very glad that they will continue to work with us during the next three years.
In our next edition, we will begin to feature profiles of our new board members, with their photos and bios. You can learn more about the current board by going to the directors’ page in www.hospicecare.com/Organisation/#directors
During the month of December, we received many donations from individuals who gave funds to IAHPC in memory of a friend or loved one as a gesture of gratitude for the care that they received from hospice and palliative care providers. These donations are very important to our organization as they are a reflection of how much impact we are really having at the level that matters most, the patients and families.
This newsletter marks the start of a new year that poses many challenges to organizations such as IAHPC. As we mentioned in a past newsletter, we will keep our commitment to support palliative care in developing countries and to implement cost effective strategies and programs that maximize our ability to help and accomplish our mission.
We appreciate the confidence that our donors, members and readers have placed in us and in our work. We strive to be better each day and look forward to working with you all in 2010.
Many thanks for your encouragement, support, and help.
Sincerely,
Roberto Wenk, MD
Chair, Board of Directors
Liliana De Lima, MHA
