Message
from the Chair
and Executive Director
Dear Readers:
We are pleased to announce the call for nominations for seven
seats to the IAHPC Board of Directors for the term 2010-2012.
A call for nominations, criteria and information on how to
apply is included in this Newsletter. Deadline for nominations
is October 31st, 2009.
We want to take this opportunity to highlight a recent publication
called The Legal Aspects of Palliative Care which
provides critical information about legal assistance for patients
and helps them to find it. It also provides information for
legal practitioners to enhance their understanding of palliative
care so that they may extend their services to patients. The
manual was produced by the Hospice Palliative Care Association
of South Africa with the support of the Public Health Program
of the Open Society Institute and the Open Society Foundation
for South Africa.
The manual includes information, case studies, and resources
on topics, such as palliative care as a human right, ethical
concerns in palliative care, poverty, financial issues and
many others. In addition, there is guidance on how to develop
policies and laws that can improve palliative care and protect
the human rights of people with life-limiting illness. The
manual’s aim is to integrate this type of information into
the provision of high-quality palliative care and legal services.
Electronic copies of the manual and individual chapters are
available at: www.hospicepalliativecaresa.co.za/legal.html.
The manual is part of a global effort to improve access to
palliative care and pain treatment through legal resources
and to promote palliative care and pain treatment as human
rights. Additional information about this initiative can be
found in our website, including the Joint Declaration which
has been signed by hundreds of individuals and representatives
from organizations around the world. If you wish to read more
about this, or sign the Declaration, you can do so in http://www.hospicecare.com/resources/pain_pallcare_hr/

Many thanks to our generous donors whose contributions enable
us to make these programs possible which further the development
of palliative care. Donations continue to support extraordinary
efforts by individuals in developing countries who work very
hard to promote and develop hospice and palliative care around
the globe. For additional information on how to help us, please

Last week, Liliana participated in the 2nd Annual
International Conference organized by UCSF and Hinds Hospice
in Fresno in California. The topic of the meeting was Hospice
and Palliative Care in Developing Countries and it
provided an opportunity for speakers and participants to discuss
the issues and barriers in the development of palliative care
in countries with limited resources. Participants came from
Nepal, China, Guatemala, Ethiopia, Uganda and Russia as well
as from Canada and other cities in the USA. We wish to thank
USCF and especially Nancy Hinds, the founder and director
of Hinds Hospice, for facilitating and putting together this
wonderful meeting and for her passion to help developing countries
establish and develop hospices and palliative care.
Until next month,
