Stein Kaasa MD, PhD
Professor of Palliative Medicine and Head of the Palliative Medicine Unit,
Department of Cancer Research and Molecular Medicine,
Faculty of Medicine, NTNU and St. Olavs University Hospital, Norway
Stein Kaasa is Professor of Palliative Medicine at the Institute of Cancer Research and Molecular Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, NTNU (Norway). His responsibilities include the development of the Core Curriculum in Palliative Medicine and the development of the Nordic Specialist Postgraduate Training Curriculum in Palliative Medicine. Professor Kaasa’s main research interests are: basic research in assessment and classification of symptoms and subjective health; experimental and descriptive clinical studies in palliative medicine and cancer research; ethics and communication in palliative care; and pain treatment, including basic research on opioids.
Professor Kaasa has published more than 250 articles in peer-reviewed journals. He has authored, edited or contributed to the content of many influential textbooks, including the Oxford Textbook of Palliative Medicine. Professor Kaasa advises many international journals either as an advisory board member (Journal of Pain and Symptom Management, Palliative Medicine, Journal of Palliative Medicine, Oncology) or a reviewer (Journal of Clinical Oncology, Pain, Lancet Oncology).
James F. Cleary, MBBS, FAChPM.
Assoc Professor of Medicine (Division of Heme/Onc) at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health; Director of the Palliative Care Program at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics; Program Leader of the UW Paul P Carbone Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Cancer Control Program; Director, WHO Collaborating Center for Policy and Communication in Cancer Care.
After receiving his medical degree from the University of Adelaide Medical School, South Australia, Dr. Cleary did his Internal Medicine Residency and Oncology fellowship at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and three years of research in opioid pharmacology at the University of Adelaide. He moved to the University of Wisconsin in 1994, where he has developed global ties in palliative care. Dr. Cleary has been a Master Facilitator for the Education of Physicians in End-of-Life Care Program (EPEC) and EPEC-Oncology and a Faculty Scholar of the OSI’s Project on Death in America. He was the 2004 President of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM). He serves as a North American Editor of Palliative Medicine, the research journal of the European Association of Palliative Care. He continues to develop and implement educational initiatives in palliative care for faculty, residents, and medical students within the UW Health System and UW Medical School partners throughout Wisconsin, particularly HospiceCare, Inc. Madison WI. The UW Health Palliative Care program has recently expanded to include a 10 bed inpatient unit. He has current grant funding from the NCI through the UW Center of Excellence of Cancer Communication Research.
