Message from the Chair

Dear readers:
As you know, one of our tasks during our strategic planning process was to review the organization’s mission and vision statements. The task force members and the board of directors have developed new statements that clearly define our organization’s role in the global field of palliative care. The new statements are featured in a separate section in this newsletter. We are very proud of the new statements because they will guide us in our future endeavors.
We are very happy to announce that an IAHPC committee has made the final selection of 11 grantees to attend the International Congress in Palliative Care in Montréal.
The following are the grantees selected as IAHPC’s Traveling Scholars:
Latin America:
Yuriko Nakashima Paniagua - Pediatric Palliative Care – Mexico

Additionally, we are delighted to announce that the IAHPC was able to form a collaborative agreement with Wyeth Pharmaceuticals to fund the travel and registration fees of seven additional scholars from Latin America to the Montréal Congress.
The following are the grantees selected as IAHPC/Wyeth Traveling Scholars:
Rosa Alvarez - Mexico
Silvia Rivas - Guatemala
Miguel Angel Otoya- Peru
Marcela Gonzalez - Chile
Patricia Granja - Ecuador
Maria Victoria Mera - Colombia
Gloria Fanny Vega – Argentina
We are very grateful with Wyeth and especially with Ms Gabriela Tamariz, manager for Latin America Products and the Wyeth country offices of Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico and Peru for their generosity and support. We are very appreciative of their support and commitment to the development of palliative care in Latin America. We hope we are able to develop similar collaborative projects with others to fund worthy individuals from other regions of the world.
The process to select the final grantees was difficult. We received more than 100 applications for support from palliative care workers from around the world for the scholarships. This means we had to reject many excellent applications and we regret that we were unable to fund more. We hope that other donors who may be reading this letter will feel moved to provide funds to the IAHPC for such efforts.
Last, but not least, early this month we announced the Joint Declaration and Statement of Commitment to recognize palliative care and pain treatment as human rights. The Joint Declaration identifies seven action points to work on in order to achieve this objective. You can see the Declaration in our website at:

We also ask that you send these links to your colleagues, friends, relatives and all your contacts. In a separate section of this newsletter, we offer a short introductory letter that you may use, or modify, to announce this important Joint Declaration. The Declaration is intended for all the citizens of the world, not just the palliative care and pain community. We want all individuals to know they can demand palliative care and pain treatment as a right.
Until next month,
Roberto Wenk, MD
