Medicine and Nursing Need Leaders in Palliative Care Education
The Harvard Medical School Program in Palliative Care Education and Practice offers intensive learning experiences for physician- and nurse-educators who wish to become expert in the clinical practice and teaching of comprehensive, interdisciplinary palliative care, as well as to gain expertise in leading and managing improvements in palliative care education and practice at their own institutions.
The Curriculum Features:
- Teaching the fundamentals of palliative care (assessment of physical causes of distress, psychosocial and spiritual assessment, ethical and cultural issues, palliative care in geriatrics and pediatric populations, depression, bereavement)
- Teaching about communication at the end of life (understanding the experience of life-threatening illness, breaking bad news, communicating across cultural barriers, family meetings, providing feedback to learners)
- Managing challenges in palliative care education (principles of adult learning, understanding learning styles, new teaching methodologies)
- Developing and promoting clinical and educational programs in palliative care (assessing institutional structure and culture; evaluating readiness to change, dealing with resistance; developing and financing palliative care programs; fund-raising strategies)

Palliative Care: Best Practice for Advanced Illness

Event Description: This two-day intensive course will provide foundational knowledge for the best practices of palliative care. The interdisciplinary team will gain understanding in the provision of palliative care for those with advanced illness or dying patients and their families.
At the conclusion of the course, participants should be able to:
Describe the need to fundamentally improve the way care for patients with advanced or terminal illness is provided; Articulate how personal experiences with serious illness, death and dying influence what we bring to professional roles; Describe a holistic approach to pain and symptom management with advanced or terminal illness; Identify some of the emotional and/or spiritual needs for advanced or terminal ill patients; Describe the legal, ethical, cultural and communication issues faced when attending to patients and families; Describe the relationship between palliative care and hospice.

Cancer Survivorship: Living With, Through & Beyond Cancer
Dear Friends and Colleagues:
On Tuesday, April 17th, CancerCare, in collaboration with National Cancer Institute: Office of Cancer Survivorship, Office of Education and Special Initiatives and Cancer Information Service, Lance Armstrong Foundation, Intercultural Cancer Council, Living Beyond Breast Cancer and National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship, will present the first of a three-part telephone education workshop series:
Cancer Survivorship: Living With, Through & Beyond Cancer
This free series, made possible by support from National Cancer Institute: Office of Cancer Survivorship, Office of Education and Special Initiatives and Cancer Information Service, and Lance Armstrong Foundation, offers cancer survivors, their families, friends and health care professionals practical information to help them cope with concerns and issues that arise after treatment ends.
Part I, which takes place on April 17th is entitled, Neuropathy and Joint Aches: New Post-Treatment Challenges. The faculty for this program include Julie Silver, MD, Cancer Survivor, Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Harvard Medical School and Nessa Coyle, NP, PhD, FAAN, Pain and Palliative Care Service, Department of Neurology, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
Part II, My Treatment is Over: Why Do I Feel So Alone and Sad?, will take place on May 15th. And Part III, Finding Hope and Meaning After Treatment, will take place on June 19th. All of the of the workshops take place from 1:30 to 2:30 pm Eastern Time.
