Amendment to simplify the medical use of opioids

West Bengal Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Rules 1986 amended with a notification # 1013-Ex/O/1A-02/12 dated 4th October 2012 by insertion of rule 8.

This amendment has simplified the process of possession, transport, purchase, sale and import of inter-state of morphine or any preparation containing morphine by “Recognized Medical Institution”.

In order to simplify the multi agency control the responsibility has been given to the Drugs Controller appointed by the state government.

20th International Conference of Indian Association of Palliative Care

The forth coming 20th International Conference of Indian Association of Palliative Care is scheduled to be held at Bengaluru, India from 8th to 10th February, 2013 at NIMHANS Convention Centre, Bengaluru.

The conference is organized by Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bengaluru. The theme, “Challenges in palliative care” is conceived with more than two decades of experience in the field; the program has been planned with multi professional renowned faculty in the field of palliative medicine from India and abroad.

Celebrating Care Homes 2013

St Christopher's Hospice, Sydenham, UK announces a unique opportunity to hear Joyce Simard, Founder of NAMASTE, Florida, USA at our conference Celebrating Care Homes 9-10 May 2013.

Joyce will share her knowledge and experience with people who are dying from very advanced dementia. This will make this conference a must for any health or social care professional involved with the holistic caring of frail older people. Alongside this we will share the evaluation of two research projects: a cluster randomized control trial looking at the facilitation of developing end of life skills in nursing home staff as well as undertaking an action evaluation of the NAMASTE CARE programs in five local nursing homes.

Inviting comment on the peer review opioid survey data from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Middle East

The survey results on the availability and accessibility of opioids for the management of cancer pain were recently presented at the ESMO 2012 Congress and announced in a press release.
The data is the most comprehensive of its kind and represents 83% of the population surveyed.
It is important that the data be as accurate and up to date as possible.

Members of the palliative care community living in various regions are invited to peer review the data by 31 December 2012.

It is requested that reviewers indicate if the data for his/her country is fair and accurate or if it needs to be amended. For any country where no data has yet been submitted, reviewers may also complete the full survey questionnaire.

Multimorbidities and the last phase of life

The Global Health Academy at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, will be hosting a conference on February 21, 2013 at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh entitled "Multimorbidities and the last phase of life".

Sir Harry Burns, Chief Medical Officer for Scotland, will give a keynote address “Resilience and an assets approach in the last phase of life.”
